TODAY'S MENU OF DELIGHTS!

Posted by Marlene Obie on Monday, January 23, 2012,
The everchanging sky is a continual source of wonder and nourishment to me.  I'm amazed that something so delicious can be zero calories and good for me to indulge in at will.  Today it is a collage of blue space, with white puffs lowlighted with sporadic areas of gray.  Sunlight brightens from behind and manages to shine through the gaps.   It is especially welcome after last week's Winterland visitation.   But then, no matter what the sky lets through, I always find beauty in the div...

Happy New Year Surprises to You!

Posted by Marlene Obie on Monday, January 2, 2012,

So here it is!  Another new year with its expectations.  Probably, or should I sey definitely, there will be surprises in store.  I certainly hope so.  What would life be like if there were none?  In theory, it sounds good, but if we could program all our desires and plans in for the year and know they'd all play out perfectly, I'm sure we'd be disappointed. Particularly if our program doesn't sync with those we want to share time and space with. There would have to be an "abort" button...

NATIONAL AUTHORS DAY MEANDERING

Posted by Marlene Obie on Tuesday, November 1, 2011,

Out of the warm house into a cold, dark, foggy morning I went today, wiped moisture off the car windows in order to see more clearly and not run into anything, turned the ignition switch and announced to the neighborhood I was leaving with a screechy noise that only sounds out on cooler mornings.  I completely understand the car's attitude about wanting to wait a littler longer, until brightness and warmth wake up to greet me.  But alas, our taxi duties and my choice of wellness activitie...

THE HUNT FOR SOMEWHERE

Posted by Marlene Obie on Tuesday, September 6, 2011,

Now where is it?  I know it's here somewhere.
I had it just the other day and put it somewhere
that would be the logical place it should go
and where I'd look when I wanted it.
But, I've looked several times where
it should be, and it's not there.
Where could it be?

Maybe, I decided it should go somewhere else
and have blocked out where that somewhere is.
Or maybe, I took it out and didn't put it back.
In which case, I laid it down somewhere.
How can I figure out where that other somewhere is?

Okay, I ne...

To All My Mothers

To All My Mothers and Other Friends

In this life, I’ve had many mothers, relatives, in-laws, friends and their mothers, mentors and teachers unbeknownst to whom I owe great debts for being part of who I have become and aspire to be.  I am a montage of their strength and tenderness, boldness and meekness, humorousness and seriousness, faith and doubt, order and chaos.

Besides giving me a home during my grade school years, my dear Aunt Mary, you planted unconditio...

Self Shut Up Your Murmuring

Posted by Marlene Obie on Friday, May 6, 2011,

I complain about

the cold weather outside

while I sit on my bed

in my cozy fleece robe,

amid comfort-filled quilts

from family and friends.

Here in my own room full of books,

mementoes, partially finished projects,

a closet crammed with clothing,

some just taking up space,

and “my life and loved ones”

picture gallery, I sip hot tea,

play games and communicate electronically.

In open exposure and barest

of shelters, some hunker down

under whatever scrounged ma...

A-CAMPING WE DID GO

Posted by Marlene Obie on Tuesday, March 8, 2011,

A pile of grocery items in a corner of the kitchen,
and a collection of camping gear
near the garage door--clues
of our family’s weekend plan.
Lists on the refrigerator door, what to buy,
what to remember to bring along.
Aromas of fried chicken, potato salad, and cake;
lunch for the first day, wrapped and put aside.

Clothing selections laid out, to be packed in a suitcase.
Tent, sleeping bags,
camp stove, axe, fishing gear,
air mattresses,
towels, lawn chairs, stools, and lanterns

On Christmas Eve

Posted by Marlene Obie on Friday, December 24, 2010,
The Day is upon us, and, as usual, there is much left undone.
It used to bother me that no matter how hard I tried,
I could never finish every detail of the perfect Christmas.
At least, the perfect Christmas that was etched into
the motivation chamber of my brain.

Now, I try for okay and what's done is enough.
We will celebrate and worship, exchange gifts
and eat more than we need to.
We gather together with family and friends
and are grateful to be loved
imperfections and all.

Imperfection, after a...

ADVENTS PAST - PART TWO

Posted by Marlene Obie on Saturday, December 18, 2010,

See It, Hear It, Feel it?

Within the cold December air we inhaled

were sights and sounds that attached

themselves forever our sensual

strolls through pre-Christmas.

Houses with decorated doors and bright trees

centered in living room windows,

a contrast against winter-white frosted

ground and rooftops.

Central Avenue, decked out with

lights, mechanical window scenes,

bell-ringing Santas and bundled-up,

bustling humans spewing smokey

white streams of breath.

Singers, alon...

Advent Pasts Part I

Posted by Marlene Obie on Tuesday, December 7, 2010,

Advent Pasts of My Childhood.

The Advents of my past began with practices for the upcoming Christmas Seasonal performances.  Upon the return to school and Sunday School after Thanksgiving, we were given scripts, music and rehearsal schedules and lesson plans in both settings were arranged around the necessary preparations.
In elementary school in the forties in Great Falls, Montana, I guess it was taken for granted that whether you attended church or not, you were Christia...

Thanksgiving Prayer and wishes.

Posted by Marlene Obie on Wednesday, November 24, 2010,

Receive our thanks, Lord, for the many blessings we have-- that we have the basic needs of warm shelter, food and clean water, as well as an abundance of love of family and friends.  We are especially thankful for the safe arrival of all around our table today.

As we enjoy the food before us with gratefulness to you and all who have contributed to it, we pray for those who will have little or no food or shelter.

As we enjoy the company of each other here, we pray for those who are separat...

CROSS SECTION OF MY CLUTTERED LIFE

Posted by Marlene Obie on Saturday, September 25, 2010,

It’s been almost nine months now since I moved into this house.  Although I pared off a lot of my possessions off, I have a sizeable coating remaining which I have been attempting to even out into an evenly distributed, appealing aesthetic.  Professional decorators would probably describe it as “partially contained clutter.”

So far I have some surfaces and walls I’m satisfied with.  Others are still in progress.  The arranged spaces have a lot of stuff which I suppose could be...

From My Home to My Home

Posted by Marlene Obie on Saturday, August 28, 2010,

I love to get away, for a day, a weekend, or longer and I love to come home to the familiar again. This trip was back to the original grounds from which I’ve been transplanted.  It was a vacation of remembrances and renewals of relationships.  I notice that as I age, the good memories are the ones that have lingered to greet me.  Some events that were not at all funny when they occurred now are conduits for shared laughter among friends.  As I compared archives of thoughts and conclus...

The Zing and the Zang of Summer Time

Posted by Marlene Obie on Tuesday, July 13, 2010,

I got home last night from vacation and am feeling satisfied, comfortable and grateful for both the break in routine and to settle back into the familiar.  I’m always ready for a venture, nearby or farther out, to look at and taste a new environment or activity.  I browse through local and getaway opportunities as I do cookbooks, searching for a different experience to blend into my ordinary meals. Often my interest is raised as I notice combinations of ingredients I hadn’t considered...

Mothers Day Thanks

Posted by Marlene Obie on Monday, May 10, 2010,

I give thanks to God:

for all the women in our lives,

Mothers all—biological, adoptive, “step”, surrogate,

pastors, teachers, friends, daughters, bosses, coworkers,

aunts, grandmothers, granddaughters, mother-in-laws, sister-in-laws

daughter-in-laws, aunts, nieces, cousins--

all females who contribute

to our health and well-being,

those who have and continue to plant mustard seeds

of love, faith and power in this time

and those who have planted in the past,

whose harves...

Am I Her? I Hope So!

Posted by Marlene Obie on Monday, May 3, 2010,

As I was brushing my hair yesterday morning, getting ready for church, I was a bit surprised to see my Aunt Mary staring back at me from the mirror.  It was about twenty years ago that my father had said I looked like her, but I didn’t see it at that time.  Yesterday, it was there.  I smiled back at her and thought I’m honored if I’m like her in more ways than appearance.

I lived with my Aunt Mary, Uncle Lowell and Cousin Darlene during my grade school years after my parents di...

Accumulation Assessment

Posted by Marlene Obie on Monday, February 15, 2010,

I’m sorting through the contents of boxes for the 4th time in the last year and a half.  How many items will I actually need and use?  What are some of these things?  (As sure as rain in the Northwest, if I toss one, I‘ll discover it was a necessary part of something that won’t work without it and can’t be ordered because the something has been discontinued.)  Lives of sundry stuff have seen only fleeting moments of light as they’ve moved between boxes, homes and states.  Others dis...

Missing Something?

Posted by Marlene Obie on Wednesday, December 30, 2009,

What am I missing?  Sometimes it seems like a lot when I see all the empty space in my basket and look at my lists of dreams, intentions and goals.  As another years closes, I wonder what more I'll be able to gather in the time left.  I'm not so concerned about the things as I am experiences, places and activities.  The desire to taste more of what's in the marketplace.  Why?  I guess it's to see if I've been missing something that would somehow make life richer.

Then, I wonder what that could...

Ready or Not

Posted by Marlene Obie on Sunday, December 20, 2009,
Are you ready for Christmas?  We ask it of each other especially during these last weeks as a conversation opener.  I envy those who have all their preparations complete because I seldom have been satisfied with my own progress, no matter how hard I try.  I recognize it has to do again with my expectations of what is necessary.  I have let go of some traditional tasks, pared down others and don't feel frenzied or guilty about it.   Circumstances have changed my routines which at first left me...

More Thanks

Posted by Marlene Obie on Thursday, November 26, 2009,
My greatest gratitude is for all the people in my life--past and present.  The greatest gift was being sent to Sunday School at an early age and discovering the unconditional, continual love of God and being part of a church family.  I have no doubt that my mental and emotional survival is due to my relationship with God and all the angels that have brought into my life.

I feel particularly blessed to have been part of some special churches, always filled with people who live their faith day...

Giving Thanks

Posted by Marlene Obie on Monday, November 23, 2009,
Everyday I do it, sometimes just saying it without embellishments or explanation.
No matter what, there's something  to which it applies.
In the darkest night, for belief that light exists;
and it will ride in on dawn's superwave.
Throughout the day, for another chance to breathe,
see, hear, smell, taste, feel, love, and enjoy it all.
For another clean, fresh space to explore and
find more understanding and insight and
and apply it, perhaps with greater finesse.
That evening brings closure, bringi...

Opening the Buds

Posted by Marlene Obie on Sunday, August 23, 2009,
I had a quote on my wall before I moved.  I'm not sure where it is now.  Just looked it up.  It's this:
And the day came when the risk to remain tight in the bud was more painful than the risk to bloom" - Anais Nin

I have a high pain threshold which is both good and bad. I can endure pain, put it aside and carry on for quite some time.  The bad is that I carry it too long before I move away from it or do something about eliminating it.  Sometimes, it creates scars or health problems before I at...

Greatfilled Bows

Posted by Marlene Obie on Tuesday, July 28, 2009,
Okay, I just had a brilliant piece done and lost battery power.  When I powered up, I was at first grateful it was there, but when I posted it, it went away.  Ratzzle, frazzle.

This past week, I've been privileged to receive e-mails, a note, and a phone call about devotions I wrote which were published in Christ in Our Home by Augsburg-Fortress.  These are short writings for two weeks in this quarterly booklet which reflect my insight and understanding of some Bible passages.  I don't feel I c...

But The Priceless, Top-Valued Leave in Their Own Rhythmic Swirl

Posted by Marlene Obie on Thursday, May 28, 2009,

Or in this case to the beat of the Energizer Bunny.
This morning, Andrea left her body behind and took the trip around the world she assured me she would be taking for free to see all the places she hadn't visited yet.  I suspect she is giving it all her studied, practical assessment and will be taking her recommendations to Management.  I'm also sure she is enjoying the beauty.
If I were to devote post after post to extoling her virtues, they would stretch across more time tha...

All Fixtures Too Must Go

Posted by Marlene Obie on Sunday, May 24, 2009,
I sat at the bedsite of a ninety-six year old friend today who will probably take her leave within a day or two.  At Foss Home & Village, she's been a fixture for 38 years, at least that's the figure since volunteer hours started being counted.  I've known her for only nine and one-half years.
She began volunteering at Foss when involvement in her children's activities required her less.  The volunteer coordinator at that time suggested she just come in and visit with people and see ho...

Running with the Muse

Posted by Marlene Obie on Sunday, May 3, 2009,
When she appears, I must follow closely.  If I look away, I may lose her in the forest of fatal assumptions and be left holding a piece of writing that looks and smells like gobbeldy gook that I don't know what to do with.  I could wander for days, weeks even in a stupor searching for the trail she cleared and then cluttered with my  hourly "do"  and "should" intentions.
This is my alibi for my absence from these pages and my former ufinished post.  I have an idea for a possible gift ...

My Heroines

Posted by Marlene Obie on Tuesday, March 31, 2009,
This last week I was able to greet, hug and honor once again the ladies of the Foss Home Auxiliary.  What a privilege it was for me to work with them for nine and one-half years and count them among my friends.  Now in their 70's, 80's and 90's, they certainly look back and feel good about the positive changes they have worked for all their lives.  They devoted years to their families, taking care of husbands, children, and parents while working in and outside the home.  Schools, churches, an...

Pushing Off

Posted by Marlene Obie on Friday, December 19, 2008,
Pushing off the edge with faith I can spread my wings and they will take me anywhere is hard.  I often stand there for years gazing at the beauty I'd like to be in and tell myself it's not possible, better to be happy with gazing at it.  Yet, like watching travel and nature videos.  It doesn't fully convey the wonder.  While I've waited, afraid to let go of the security I delude myself I have, positions erode and crumble and storms change the places I stand.

There's always the option of back...

It's Been Snow Long

Posted by Marlene Obie on Thursday, December 18, 2008,
How long has it been since I found snow exciting?   Many years!  It was fun to see the kids' excitement when they were small.  I used to run out to play with them and now M.  Yet, tonight I'm watching from the window, not wanting to get cold.  I'll go and play tomorrow.
When I was her age, I lived with my aunt and uncle who had a huge yard, perfect for playing Fox and Geese and making angels.  Plenty of snow too for forts and snowball wars.  We walked to school 4 blocks with scarves a...

WAITING

Posted by Marlene Obie on Tuesday, November 18, 2008,

Patience is one of my greatest qualities.  However, it is also one of my worst faults.  Sometimes, waiting turns out to be the wisest response to a situation.  Things have a way of settling down and sorting out as they would with or without my jumping on a horse and riding in at full speed.  That doesn't mean though that I am calm and serene as I wait. My mind is filled with possible solutions and fear over what might happen.  I pray and pace and consider what I might say and how to say i...

Hanging onto the Running Board

Posted by Marlene Obie on Friday, October 31, 2008,

Today I feel like I've been standing on the running board of an old car while it is going down a bumpy road at full speed, around curves and over small rolling hills.  At least, hanging on has required my attention and kept it away from my gloomy situation predicitons.  I just hope I can stay on through the weekend as I don't forsee being able to slow it down.
What am I doing with my retirement freedom?  Sorting out possessions and emotions, writing, putting off things I need to do a...
